#4 - USE PURCHASED OFFSETS

As there are obvious architectural and site limitations in the production of on site energy via renewables to provide power for aspects of the project that cannot solve their energy requirements passively, carbon offsetting is used to bring the project to a state of carbon neutrality.

A carbon offset is a financial instrument representing a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Although there are six primary categories of greenhouse gases carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e). One carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.

Offsets are typically generated from emissions-reducing projects. The most common project type is renewable energy, such as wind farms, biomass energy, or hydroelectric dams. Power can also be purchased from providers who will guarantee its sourcing from clean energy providers. The provider will ensure that the power comes from clean, emissions-free sources like wind power and low-impact water power instead of carbon-intensive sources like coal and oil.

It will be necessary to look locally to find such providers that can offer this type of assistance near the project.
