Never before have architectural educators and professionals faced the magnitude and urgency of today’s ecological challenges resulting from global warming and climate change. To meet these challenges, the Society of Building Science Educators (SBSE) has initiated the Carbon Neutral Design (CND) Project to create and disseminate the resources and tools needed to integrate carbon neutral and zero-energy design into professional architecture programs and practice. This project is a direct response to the 2010 Imperative (which is a call for architectural educators to address carbon neutral design and fossil fuel reduction in the design studio, to improve ecological literacy for design students, and to integrate related issues in the design and operations of university facilities and campuses) as well as the Architecture 2030 Challenge (the realization of carbon neutral architecture by the year 2030).
The Carbon Neutral Design (CND) Project is a joint effort by the AIA, members of AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE), and the Society of Building Science Educators (SBSE) to produce educational and
resource materials for carbon neutral design. SBSE, a non-profit educational organization with members
from the academy, governmental agencies and publishers, has for over twenty years served as an
incubator for new approaches to teaching environmentally responsive architectural design. This
partnership with the academy has capitalized on the expertise of building science educators and
practitioners to produce this peer reviewed, web-ready content on carbon neutral design.
The CND Project acknowledges that there are identifiable starting positions and best practices that are required to succeed in reducing the energy demands of a building to allow it to reach a state of Carbon Neutrality.
This, the initial phase of the Carbon Neutral Design Project will focus on reducing the carbon emissions for the operating energy of the building. Operating energy has been selected over embodied energy as it represents the major contribution to the carbon emissions of a building, and is the focus of the 2030 Challenge. Practices, protocols and tools to reduce the carbon associated with embodied energy will form the focus of subsequent research associated with this project.
Funding for the project has been provided by the American Institute of Architects, the Brico Fund and a private donor.

Terri Meyer Boake is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of Architecture at the University of Waterloo Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, teaching in the areas of environmental design, building construction and new media. She has created and maintains a web based case study resource for Sustainable Canadian Buildings, and also maintains web based education resources. Professor Boake has expertise in web design and the creation of multimedia resources. She has completed two learning resources for the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction and is currently engaged in the development and production of two others. She co authored two key Carbon Neutral Directed presentations the AIA Conference in May 2008, and is presenting "The Leap to Zero Carbon" at the Ontario Association of Architects Convention in May 2009. Mary Guzowski, Associate Professor, School of Architecture, University of Minnesota
Mary Guzowski teaches and conducts research related to daylighting, environmental technology, and ecological design. Her research publications include over thirty articles, the book Daylighting for Sustainable Design, and two web-based design resources, including the Minnesota Sustainable Design Guide and the Minnesota Green Housing Design Guide. She received an AIA Minnesota award among others for her contributions to sustainable education. Mary is currently working on the Initiative for Renewable Energy in Architecture and the Minnesota Zero Energy Design Protocol, two projects integrating zero-energy and carbon-neutral design in Minnesota.
