harry tuttle
brazil

archibald "harry" tuttle, played by robert de niro, adds greatly to the sense of madness in the film brazil. the character of harry tuttle also gives us clues to the madness of the main character sam lowry. the following is the rough writings of the 'tuttle conspiracy' (a work in progress). it is my opinion that the character of harry tuttle doesn't actually exist within the confines of the film, but is a manifestation of sam lowry's alternate identity as a terrorist. yes a terrorist. i first began to question the existence of harry during the last scene when he disappears in a mess of flyers. this got me thinking, we never see the character of harry tuttle alone, in every scene with harry, sam lowly is also there. harry once worked for the government but left due to the amount of red tape. very interesting. the ways in which harry exits the scenes are extremely fantastic, even for the elaborate architectural landscapes that exist in the film. sam lowry is a un-inspired low level government employee, but harry tuttle is a highly skilled information... something or other, with the ability to create and delete people form existence, he would be capable in creating the renegade air-system specialist harry tuttle as the unattainable fall guy for his activities. the conspiracy kind of falls apart when harry is spotted by co-terroist jill layton. but i'm sure there is a perfectly good explanation for this. i'll eventually have to re-watch this movie through this lense to see if it holds any water.
