The characters in Solaris attribute to achievement of madness through the way they react to new knowledge about phenomena that occur around them. Each character reacts differently to these phenomena and plays a unique role in creating madness. In a way, each character can be described as a necessary make-up component that conjur up the mad atmosphere. The two scientists, Dr. Snaut and Dr. Sartorius, act as characters that provide a source of madness by creating unexplained phenomena and remaining secretive about it until the point it becomes unbearable to Kris and Hari. Due to Hari’s emotional personality and experience of identity crisis, she acts as the catalyst for the madness imposed by the scientists. Kris is the observant, attempting to make sense out of the madness and tries to resolve the situation.
